Homer softball season closes with Growlers on top

The eight teams of the Homer Softball Association finished off the season in a double elimination tournament at Jack Gist Park last weekend.

The rivalry peaked during the championship game between Beluga Lake Lodge and the Growlers, who took the first place trophy after winning the game 10-6. Spenard Builders Supply took third after losing to Beluga Lake Lodge 11-9.

Saturday’s games were seeded based on season performance. The Growlers went undefeated through the tourney, and displayed a similar score throughout the summer, having only lost two games.

Growlers coach Edan Badajos credited the strong season to a consistent line-up.

“We had pretty much the same folks out there each and every night,” he said. “Most of our players have been playing together for a few years now and we enjoy it.”

Growlers’ Jed Fonkert and Beluga Lake Lodge’s Laureen Wentz won the MVP male and female award. Fonkert was applauded by his coach for his multiple diving catches in the outfield, three home runs and being the team RBI leader for the tournament.

Alibi’s Dakota Tennison and Kharacters-Cups’ Bruce Shaw were given the Barney Ryan “Love of the Game” award for continuing the legacy of the late Barney Ryan’s dedication and love for softball.

The Homer Softball Association will start again next spring. For updates visit the Homer Softball Association Facebook page.
