Kevin Bell Day includes free public skate at arena

Sunday is Kevin Bell Day at the Kevin Bell Arena on the Homer Spit. There will be a free public skate from 2-3:30 p.m.

Other events include a tribute to Bell beginning at about 3:45 p.m. with cross ice hockey with the MicroBells/Mites; from 4:30-5:15 p.m., there will be cross ice hockey for the Squirts; from 5:30-6:15 p.m., there will be cross ice hockey with the Pee Wees; from 6:30-7:15 p.m. there will be cross ice hockey with the Bantams/High School; from 7:30-8:30 p.m., there will be cross ice hockey for the adult co-ed league; and from 8:45-9:45 p.m. there will be broomball adult co-ed play.

Kevin Bell was a driving force behind Homer hockey, helping to keep kids and adults interested in a hockey program even when they didn’t have much ice to play on. Partly because of Bell’s perseverance, Homer hockey players now have an indoor facility to practice and play on — and it is named in his honor. Bell died Jan. 7, 2008, after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was 53.
