Lady Mariners fall to Skyview, Seward right before Regions

The Lady Mariners finished their last two games of the regular season last week. They traveled to Skyview to play the Panthers last Thursday and the Seward Seahawks came to town for Homer’s senior night on Saturday.

Thursday, the Panthers swept the Lady Ms with scores of 9-25, 20-25 and 15-25. Homer totaled only 28 digs, seven of which came from Maggie Koplin. Kristie Mastre had a team high four aces while Caroline Decreft pitched in 12 assists. Zoia Basargin led offensively with five kills in what was a quiet game for Homer.

Saturday night the large group of senior girls were acknowledged in the Alice Witte Gymnasium before the start of the game against the Seahawks.

The first match ended up being the longest of their season, back and forth until Seward scored two in a row winning 29-31.

Seward continued to carry the momentum and defeated Homer 19-25 and 21-25 in two more close matches.

Mastre led the team with 11 digs and four aces. Cayenna Anderson led the offense for Homer with nine kills off 20 attempts. Decreft and Hope Hudson combined for all of the Mariners 23 assists. The Mariners had 18 errors on that night.

The Mariners began their travels to the regional tournament in Cordova on Wednesday and face Grace in the opening round on Friday.

Coach Beth Trowbridge has confidence in her team going into Region play.

“All the teams are pretty even this year and the matches have all been close so it should be a very exciting tournament with the possibility that anything can happen for the teams that show up to play on Friday and Saturday,” she said.

Trowbridge expects a lot of great rallies and intense action this weekend.

Norm Anderson is a student at the Kachemak Bay Campus of Kenai Peninsula College.
