Local swimmers participate in Alaska State Swimming Championships

Kachemak Swim Club athletes competed in the Alaska Swimming State Championships April 24-27 at Bartlett High School in Anchorage. KSC coach Jamie Roth said in an email Monday, May 5, that the championships provided a platform for the KSC to demonstrate their dedication, skill and teamwork. Roth said the competition brings together top swimmers from across the state, and Homer’s athletes performed admirably, achieving significant milestones and setting new personal bests. As a team, KSC ranked 17 out of 23.

KSC team for the statewide championships consisted of Avery Briscoe, Lorelia Kinney, Anika and Elias Sundheim, Jeremiah and Benjamin Overdorf, Finn Brewer, Jody Goodrich, Cassidy Carroll, and Katie Hallam. Roth said that the top scorers for the team were Jeremiah Overdorf (44), Katie Hallam (29) and Cassidy Carroll (23), who all swam fast enough to final in multiple events.

Roth said throughout the championships, KSC swimmers displayed noticeable sportsmanship, supporting each other during highs and lows. Three swimmers were not in optimal health during the competition, but Roth said their “camaraderie and mutual encouragement were evident, contributing to a positive and motivating environment.”

Every member of KSC participated in relays. The relays were at the beginning of each session, and Roth said she was particularly proud of the swimmers who put 100% into their relays at the beginning of a long day.

Roth said that all KSC swimmers achieved personal best times in individual events, highlighting their continuous improvement and dedication to the sport. Sundheim set new, personal bests in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, and 200-yard freestyle. Hallam set PBs in the 1,650-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, and 50-yard freestyle. Carroll set PBs in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard background, 50-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, and 200-yard freestyle. Goodrich set a new personal best in his 50-yard freestyle event. Overdorf swam PBs in his 1,650-yard freestyle, 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, and 1000-yard freestyle.
