Mariners host last home games of basketball season on Friday

The Homer Mariners hosted the Kenai Kardinals for a rivalry endowment game on Tuesday night in basketball action.
Although they are now in separate conferences, this Homer-Kenai rivalry has shown fans some of the best basketball games held in the Alice Witte Gymnasium through the years.
The Lady Mariners opened the night with a 47-34 loss in varsity action. Center and team captain Hailey Oliver led the Mariners with 14 points, all coming in the first half. Tayla Cabana followed with eight points in the low-scoring game.
Kenai’s captain, Sydney Taylor, led the game with 18 points, despite going 3-9 from the foul line. Justice English added 15 points and a three-pointer to secure the victory.
The Mariner Men fell 51-33 in a defensive second half by Kenai. Josh McKee led the scoring with 13 points, being the only Kard in double digits. Sam Reinert scored 12 for Homer, six of which came from the free throw line. Sheldon Hutt pitched in 11, scoring the Mariners’ only points in the third quarter where they were outscored 18-3.
On Friday, the Mariners host the Seward Seahawks for their senior night and last home game of the season. Games start at 6 p.m. at Homer High School.

In Feb. 22 basketball action:
Cordova girls 35, Homer 34
The visiting Mariners led for most of the game only to watch the Wolverines rally at the end.
Homer led 11-7 after the first quarter and 19-15 at halftime. The Mariners then led by six in the fourth.
Tayla Cabana had 16 points for Homer, while Ronalyn Adajar had 12 for Cordova.

Cordova boys 51, Homer 32
After a slow start, the Wolverines picked up a victory over the visiting Mariners.
Homer led by one after the first quarter, but Cordova went into halftime up 23-17 and then outscored Homer 12-5 in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Dylan Cheshier paced the Wolverines with 11 points, while Sam Reinert had 11 points for Homer.
