In Alaska, athletes have to strike while the track is hot due to a short season often plagued by nasty weather.
Competitors at the Region 3 meet at balmy Service High School did just that Friday and Saturday, with two meet records falling on the girls side and three meet records falling on the boys side.
The meet is divided into Division I and II, and records also are kept for the Division II meet. An additional four Division II records fell for the girls, while five fell for the boys.
The Soldotna boys won the Division I title for the fourth time in six years, the SoHi girls won the Division I title for the seventh straight year, the Homer girls won the Division II title for the fifth time in eight years, and the Mountain City Christian Academy boys won their fifth title in seven years.
Soldotna took advantage of the conditions to furnish three of the top performances in Alaska track history. In addition to those three performances, the Stars broke three other school records and an additional meet record.
“My mind is blown,” Soldotna head coach Phil Leck said. “I walked off that track today, just trying to put it in perspective, and I just really can’t. I haven’t seen a boys and girls team take down that type of Alaska history in one day before.
“Top-five performances, lots of region records, just pretty incredible to watch the kids compete.”
Tyce Escott won the 100-meter dash in 10.80 seconds for the fourth-fastest time in Alaska prep history. East’s Colton Herman ran 10.76 and 10.79 in 2019, while Ketchikan’s Jason Lorig set the state meet record at 10.68 in 2024.
That’s according to records originally kept by Kodiak’s Marcus Dunbar, and now kept by Arielle Himelbloom of the Alaska Sports Report.
Lorig, a senior, and Escott, a junior, are both set to compete at the state meet Friday and Saturday at Dimond High School in Anchorage.
“I think that’s the big talk around the track community right now,” Leck said. “We don’t get to see the Ketchikan kid until state.
“Last year, it was, what is he going to do? They ran these wind-aided times. Then he shows up and backed it up. He was great.”
Escott also broke the region meet record, which was set by Corey Moore of Wasilla in 1998 and Joel Price of Soldotna in 1993. Those two were hand-timed at 10.7, which converts to 10.94 in fully automatic timing.
Finally, Escott broke Joel Knight’s 1995 school record of 10.90. Knight had the state meet record from 1995 until Herman broke it in 2019.
Leck said the 100 was run into a very slight headwind, but added the temperature was in Escott’s favor. All eight finalists in the 100 ran a PR.
“The track was hot,” Leck said. “It was probably 70 some degrees on the track, and it felt hot. When you’re sprinting, it makes a huge difference.”
In the 400 relay, Lokeni Wong, Escott, Wyatt Faircloth and Brenden Jones won at 43.05. According to Himelbloom, that’s the top 400 relay ever run on Alaska soil, eclipsing Bartlett’s 43.24 from 2018.
The crew also rebroke their school record and Colony’s 2000 region meet record of 43.91.
“They told me they’re going to run fast today,” Leck said. “They said we’re going 42-something today, and I said, ‘Just execute the relay and move it on to next week, because we’re not taking chances today.’”
The girls 1,600 relay of Sophia Jedlicki, Shiloh Zichko, Annie Burns and Sasha Brott won at 4:02.30. Himelbloom has that as the third fastest Alaska prep time in history, plus the second fastest by runners from the same school.
In 2014, the South Central All-Stars ran 3:57.31, while Kenai Central ran 4:01.72 in 2010. In addition to rebreaking their school record, the Stars also broke Kenai’s 2009 region meet record of 4:09.88.
“Complete shock,” Leck said of the 1,600 relay time.
The 1,600 relay is the last event of the meet and the Stars had been rolling since the 400 relays, winning 10 of the last 12 events. And in one of the events they lost, they still set a school record.
“It was one of those things in sports where you get the momentum,” Leck said. “You don’t ever really see that in track.”
During that stretch, Sophia Jedlicki ran the 400 in 58.35 and lost to the 57.78 of Palmer’s Leila Petersen, but beat Daisy Nelson’s school record.
“Daisy was a very impressive athlete for us, and that was an impressive record that she broke,” Leck said.
The Soldotna boys 1,600 relay of Ethan Anding, Jones, James Innes and Parker Richards won at 3:28.67 for a school record and region record. The former record was set by Grace in 2000 at 3:29.20.
Leck said the fourth member of the relay has varied. Saturday, Richards got his shot.
“It’s not like he was completely new to it, but that wasn’t necessarily one of the ones that had solidified himself yet,” Leck said. “We’re pretty sure he solidified himself this week. So we’re proud of them.”
The final SoHi school record came from the boys 3,200 relay of Jayden Yeager, Michael Davidson, Innes and Anding. The quartet ran 8:09.81, while Kodiak won at 8:09.43.
“I wasn’t expecting them to break the school record, but I was expecting them to compete with Kodiak,” Leck said.
The final region meet record was set by the Homer girls 400 relay of Jaelynn Kennon, Liliana Harris, Immi Im and Molly Evans at 50.92 seconds, breaking Colony’s 2001 mark of 51.03 and also Kenai’s 2019 Division II mark of 52.00 seconds. That’s also a new school record for Homer.
Homer’s girls also set a new Division II standard in the 800 relay, with Harris, Isabella Clarke, Im and Evans running 1:49.93 to erase Homer’s 1:51.95 from 2016.
Kenai Central also grabbed a Division II record when Gage Ivy went 42 feet, 11.50 inches, to erase the 2009 mark of 40—7 set by Seward’s Travis Price.
Other Division II records were set by MCCA’s Jieaya Siatini Williams in the shot put, Redington’s Mia Bukala in the triple jump, Grace’s Robbie Annett in the 1,600, MCCA’s Jaidhen Oyao in the long jump, and the 400 and 800 relays from MCCA.
The Soldotna boys won 10 of 17 events in the meet to score 120 points to the 100 of runner-up Colony.
Faircloth took first place in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Escott also won the 200 in a PR of 22.29, while Innes won the 400 in 50.67 for the third fastest time in school history and Anding won the 800 in a PR of 2:03.45.
Luke Miller won the shot put, while the 800 relay of Anding, Jones, Innes and Escott took the final victory.
The Soldotna girls also won 10 of 17 events to score 146 points to the 92 of Colony. Sarah Brown won the 100, Burns won the 800, Samantha Piscoya won the 100 hurdles with a PR of 17.01 and Anaulie Sedivy won the 300 hurdles.
Soldotna took all four relays, with Sedivy, Brown, Greyson Henry and Lucy Uhlir winning the 400 relay, Zichko, Sedivy, Brown and Naomi Zichko winning the 800 relay and Brott, Kathryn Cox, Burns and Kathryn DeBardelaben winning the 3,200 relay.
Henry won the long jump with a PR of 15—8.25, while DeBardelaben won the triple jump with a PR of 33—9.5.
The Homer girls won 10 of 17 events to score 213 points to the 126 of MCCA.
The Mariners were able to post that performance despite a tough injury to senior leader Gracie Miotke, a two-time Division II state champ in the 300 hurdles.
In Friday qualifying, Miotke fell and sprained an ankle in the 100 hurdles, impeding a runner in the process and getting disqualified.
“Quick ankle tape and immediately qualified for the finals in the 100m,” Homer coach Bob Ostrom wrote in a text message.
Ostrom said the pain in the ankle was too much and Miotke did not make it through qualifying of the 300 hurdles, meaning she won’t compete in either hurdles event at state.
Miotke did come back to win the 100 meters Saturday. (Yes. Homer did pull off a region meet record in the 400 relay without the winner of the 100 on the team.)
“It shows how confident, determined and resilient she is,” Ostrom wrote.
Leck said in a meet of standout performances, Miotke’s performance in the 100 fits right in.
“That’s a leader right there for that team,” he said. “My heart hurts for her, but she showed more grit than I’ve seen in a lot of kids in a long time.”
Also for Homer, Molly Evans won the 200 in a PR of 26.96, Vera Bates won the 400 in a PR of 1:00.06 and Etta Bynagle won the 800 in a PR of 2:26.41.
The Homer girls won all the relays, with Brightly Thoning, Beatrix McDonough, Vera Bates and Maddy Miotke winning the 1,600 relay, and McDonough, Claira Booz, Jaela Marchbanks and Bynagle winning the 3,200 relay.
Kennon won the high jump with a PR of 4—10 and Reilly Sue Baker won the long jump with a PR of 16—7.
The Homer boys were third, with the lone victory coming from Tait Ostrom’s PR of 42.97 in the 300 hurdles. Joe Gordon set a new school record in the 200 in the prelims with a 22.94, then finished second in the finals.
The Seward girls were third, while the Seward boys were fourth.
Olive Jordan won the 1,600 with a PR of 5:27.43, and lowered her school record in the 400 to 1:00.28 in finishing second. Indigo Leslie had a PR of 12:00.37 to win the 3,200.
Ronan Bickling swept the 100 and 200 for the Seward boys, hitting a PR of 23.03 in the 200 that resets his school record.
In the high jump, Olin Liljemark hit a new PR of 6—1 to lead a sweep of the podium. Luke Elhard was second, while Van Shank was third.
The Kenai boys were fifth, while the Kenai girls were sixth. In the 110 hurdles, Delen Byrd was second and Matthew Krol was third for the Kards.
In the discus, Daniel Bettis had a PR of 118—4 to take third. Sophie Tapley was second in the long jump at 16—2.75.
Kenai also had both 400 relays take second, with the boys team of Byrd, Aidan Jackman, Elliot Hanson and Ivy, and the girls team of Selah Coots, Bryleigh Williams, Elliot Stockton and Tapley.
The Nikiski boys were seventh. Ethan Ellis was fifth in the long jump and sixth in the high jump, while Ryder Maguire was sixth in the 800 and 1,600.
