Nikolaevsk netters win Denali volleyball crown

Today, volleyball teams from Nikolaevsk and Seldovia head to the Mixed Six State Tournament in Anchorage. It is the third-straight state trip for the Warriors.

On Nov. 21, teams from Seldovia, Kodiak, Nikolaesk and Fort Yukon participated in the Region 2 Denali Conference Mixed 6 Volleyball Tournament in Seldovia. The Nikolaevsk Warriors came out on top, with the Seldovia Sea Otters in second place. The sportsmanship award went to the team from Kodiak.

Nikolaevsk’s Neil Gordeev was the conference MVP, while the Warriors also put Greg Trail, Megan Hickman and Jonah Yakunin on the all-conference squad. Aidan Philpot and Olivia Turner made the team for Seldovia.

Alan Haskins, principal of Susan B. English School in Seldovia, said the tournament was great. “Games were all very evenly matched,” he said. “The kids had fun and all played well.”
