Offensive alumni game gives goalies work

Homer Mariner Hockey hosted its annual alumni game last Friday at the Kevin Bell Arena. The alums won 4-2 as former Mariner goalie Luke Eckert saved 22 of 24 shots on his goal.

The first period began less physical than most hockey games, with no penalties or timeouts called. Instead, the Mariners took their high-powered offense straight to the goalie, drawing first blood with just under two minutes gone by sophomore Kiril Sanarov off of a Carson Duggar assist.

The Mariners were ahead until the 5:45 mark when 2010 graduate Jason Baird netted a Beau Greenwall miss to tie the game. Just over a minute later, sophomore Clem Tillion assisted Duggar on a slapshot to take a 2-1 lead going into the second period. Eckert saved all 11 shots in the second period while Homer goalie Alex Sanarov saved 13 of 14, the goal coming at the 14-minute mark of the second period as a Josh Pita miss gave Keith Bell a clear shot at the net to tie the game. After the goal, two offensive hooking plays on the alumni closed out the period.

The Mariners came out looking to even the odds in the final period, but couldn’t get the puck around Eckert’s veteran goalie moves, stopping yet another seven shots. The back-and-forth game came down to the final five minutes when Scott Owen widened the gap to two off of assists from David Buckley and Pita. Pita then sealed the game at the 1:52 mark as Adam Trieweiler was awarded the assist. Sanarov stopped 26 of 30 shots for the M’s on the night.
