Warriors win battle against Bulldogs

The Nikolaevsk Warriors girls and boys basketball teams were host to the Nikiski Bulldogs “C” team on Tuesday. In the two non-conference games, the Nikolaevsk girls won their match-up, 38-16, and the boys followed suit with an even bigger margin of victory, 59-15.

High scorers for the Warrior girls were Serafima Kalugin with 13 points and Megan Hickman with 12.

Non-conference games like Tuesday’s “give the girls more games against a variety of schools and levels of playing,” said Head Coach Bea Klaich.

Five of the girls on the Nikolaevsk team scores and “the bench got lots of experience and playing time,” Klaich added.

From the start of the game, the Warriors boys team gave the Bulldogs little change to gain a foothold. The Warriors led at the end of the first quarter, 30-2, and never let up their race to a victory.

“The Nikolaevsk boys came out with a lot of energy, first game of the year,” said Head Coach Steve Klaich. “We moved the ball well and our defense created turnovers that resulted in points.”

With only nine players on this year’s team, the three freshmen got a lot of valuable time.

“They started to run the offense and it game me a good look at areas that I need to re-teach and adjust so that the freshmen mesh better with the older players,” said Steve Klaich.

On Friday, the Nikolaevsk boys play a conference game against Wasilla Lake Christian School at Nikolaevsk, with the game beginning at 6 p.m.

The three-day Nikolaevsk Warrior Rumble is Jan. 22-24, with teams from Newhalen, Tri-Valley and Fort Yukon participating.

“None of these games are in our conference, although they are all strong 1A teams,” said Steve Klaich.

The Newhalen girls are defending 1A state champs and the Fort Yukon boys are showing promise for a run at the boy’s state title this season.

“We should have some great action,” said Steve Klaich.
