Upcoming events:

Hockey: The Homer High School hockey team will face off against Wasilla High School during an away game at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11. Then the team heads to Colony High School for a game at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, and finishes out the weekend in the Mat-Su with a game against Palmer High School at noon on Saturday, Jan. 13.

Cross-country skiing: The Homer Mariner Nordic ski team will compete away at the Mat-Su Invite at the Government Peak trails on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12-13.

Girls Basketball: The girls varsity basketball team will take on Anchorage Christian School in an away game at 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 11, then Houston in an away game at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, and finally Joe Redington High School in an away game at noon Saturday, Jan. 13. The junior varsity girls will play Anchorage Christian School in an away game at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11.

Boys Basketball: The boys varsity basketball team will play at the Anchorage Christian School Invite on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 4-6. The junior varsity boys will also play Anchorage Christian School, but at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11. The C Team will play Anchorage Christian School that same day, but at 1:30 p.m.

Homer High School

Hockey: The Homer High School’s hockey team came out victorious in its game against Kenai Central High School on Saturday. The Mariners topped the Cardinals 8-2 in their North Star Conference game at the Kenai Multi-Purpose Facility.

The game was hovering at 2-0 until late in the second period, after which Homer continued to rack up the goals. Isaiah Nevak scored two of those goals, with additional goals from Tyler Gilliland, JJ Williamson, Lee Lowe, Phin Weston, Alden Ross and Ethan Pitzman. Kenai’s two goals were made by Matt Hagel and Nate Beiser.

Goalie Josh Tree had 49 saves for Kenai, while Homer’s Hunter Warren had 20 saves.

Basketball: Over the weekend, the Homer boys varsity basketball team competed in the Al Howard/Powerade Tip-Off Tournament at Soldotna High School. Homer finished the tournament 1-2, with Jordan Beachy and Koby Etzwiler being named to the all-tournament team.

The same weekend, the Lady Mariners varsity team was competing at the Craig Jung Kenai River Challenge, which was won by Kenai Central High School. Homer’s Grace Godfrey, Rylee Doughty and Alissa Cole all left the tournament with six points. Anna Godrey was also named to the all-tournament team.
