Women’s ‘Winter Jamboree’ this weekend

Temperatures have been above freezing, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t hockey season. Just ask the 100 women from around the state participating in the Homer Winter Jamboree.

“The Homer Hockey Association and the Homer Divas Women’s Hockey are thrilled to announce the Fifth annual Winter Jamboree hockey tournament scheduled to take place January 16-18 at the Kevin Bell Arena,” said a Jan. 12 press release.

The 15-game tournament begins at 3:30 p.m. and continues through Sunday, with the schedule allowing for Mariner hockey.

“It’s going to be crazy busy at the rink this weekend,” said Ingrid Harrald of Homer Divas Women’s Hockey.

Interest in the tournament has grown over the years, with the numberof players doubled.

“Hockey players are arriving from Palmer, Juneau, Soldotna, Fairbanks and Anchorage to play in Homer this weekend,” said the press release.

In addition to games, a meet-and-greet will be held at the Salty Dawg from 6-9 p.m. Friday. The weekend also includes a fundraising party for teams and supporters Saturday at Beluga Lake Lodge, from 8 p.m.-midnight, with a silent auction and Homer’s best deejay, CJ. Proceeds will be split, with 50 percent going to the Divas and 50 percent to youth scholarships.

The tournament is sponsored by Beluga Lake Lodge. Team sponsors include Homer’s Jeans, Fritz Creek, Alaska Training Room, Down East Saloon, AJ’s and Salty Dawg.

Friday: 3:30 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 6 p.m., 9:45 p.m.

Saturday: 7:30 a.m., 8:45 a.m., 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 3:15 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 5:45 p.m., 7 p.m.

Sunday: 8 a.m., 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., championship game 11:45 a.m.
