Wrestling roundup: SoHi boys win Monster Bash; Service claims Top Dog wrestling tournament

The Service wrestling team won the Top Dog wrestling tournament at Nikiski on Saturday.

The Cougars scored 309 points to win the tournament, which featured 22 teams and over 300 entrants. Redington was second with 288.5 points.

From the Kenai Peninsula, Nikiski was sixth with 144, Kenai Central was eighth with 132, Soldotna junior varsity was ninth with 123.5, Seward was 15th with 86.5 and Homer was 17th with 84.5.

Robert Isabel and Mayaac Schmit led the Bulldogs by taking second place. At 215 pounds, Isabel made it to the final but was pinned by Barrow’s Benjamin Kaui. At 285, Schmit made the final but was pinned by Barrow’s Uatahouse Tuifua.

Also in the top six for Nikiski were Wyatt Maguire in fourth at 125, Tim Goodnight in fourth at 189 and Paisley Maxwell in fourth at girls 107.

The Kardinals picked up championships from Andrew Gaethle at 152, Sarai Bravo-Moe at 126 girls and Jenna Yeoman at 165 girls.

Gaethle notched a 6-3 decision over Hayden Whitt of Service in the title match. Bravo-Moe pinned her way through the three rounds of 126 girls competition. Yeoman also pinned her way through the rounds.

Antonio Perez also reached the finals at 145 for Kenai, getting pinned by Ryunosuke Tsukada in the championship match.

Also in the top six for the Kards, Daniel Steffensen was third at 130, Cameron Cook was third at 152 and Elisha Beans was fourth at girls 152.

In the top six for Soldotna JV were Jace Guilliam in sixth at 103, Samuel Henry in fifth at 103, Nicholas Rackley in fourth at 145, Liam Peck in fifth at 152, Jaykob Kemp in fourth at 160, Rodney McNeel in sixth at 215 and Kevin Steger in sixth at 285.

The Seahawks received a championship from Hunter Forshee-Kurtz at 119. Forshee-Kurtz pinned Bethel’s Sheldon Smith in the championship match.

Tommy Jarnig, at 103, also worked his way into the finals. Jarnig was pinned by Young Erikson of Nome in the title match.

Also in the top six for the Seahawks were John Van Buskirk in fourth at 285 and Chloe Lastimosa in third at girls 126.

Homer received championships from Saoirse Cook at girls 132 and Roane Cook at girls 235.

In the championship match, Saoirse Cook pinned Mckaylie Luedde of Service. Roane Cook pinned her way through the three rounds at 235.

Also in the top six for the Mariners were Paul Minke in sixth at 130.

Soldotna boys win Halloween Monster Bash Duals

The Soldotna wrestling team won the Halloween Monster Bash Duals at South on Saturday for the first time in school history.

The Stars had a 6-0 record in dual meets to win the tournament. Soldotna defeated Wasilla 59-18, West 82-0, Chugiak 77-0, Palmer 76-5, South 42-27 and Colony 50-30.

Going undefeated for SoHi were Sam Strouse at 103, Hunter Bras at 135, Trevor Michael at 145/152, Hunter Richardson at 189 and Liam Babitt at 215.

Soldotna girls take 3rd at Monster Bash

The Soldotna girls wrestling team took third place at the Monster Bash Women’s Tournament on Saturday.

Palmer won the tournament with 49 points, while Bethel had 44 and the Stars had 41.

In the top six for the Stars were Megan Whittom in third at first-day 107, Jessica Leclair in first at first-day 107, Taylor Whittom in second at first-day 114, Kellyn Hansen in third at first-day 114, Kaytlin McAnelly in fifth at first-day 138, Daisy Hannevold in first at first-day 145, Erin Bell in third at first-day 165, Megan Whittom in fourth at second-day 107, Jessica Leclair in first at second-day 107, Taylor Whittom in second at second-day 114, Kellyn Hansen in third at second-day 114, Daisy Hannevold in first at second-day 145 and Erin Bell in third at second-day 165.
