Update: District-wide schools and activities closure in effect Friday through Saturday, Jan. 16-17

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District announced at approximately 10:19 a.m. Friday morning that all activities scheduled on the Peninsula for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 16-17, are cancelled.
“The safety of our students, staff, and families remains our priority,” KPBSD assistant superintendent Kari Dendurent wrote. “We appreciate your understanding and encourage everyone to use caution during these conditions.
KPBSD has implemented school closures for every school in the district on Friday, Jan. 16 due to rain and freezing temperatures expected overnight. All Kenai Peninsula College campuses will be closed as well, and campus events are canceled.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the Kenai Peninsula in effect until 3 p.m. Friday, forecasting 1-1.5 inches of rain and 1-3 inches of snow. Winds up to 50 miles per hour are possible Friday morning.
“The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commutes,” NWS said. “Rain falling onto roadways with blocked or frozen drainage may cause ponding and localized flooding. Hydroplaning is likely in areas with significant water buildup.”

The following schools are affected by the closure.
Central peninsula: Aurora Borealis Charter School, Central, Connections, Kaleidoscope Charter School, K-Beach Elementary School, Kenai Alternative School, Kenai Central High School, Kenai Middle School, Marathon School, Mountain View Elementary School, Nikiski Middle/Senior High School, Nikiski North Star Elementary School, Ninilchik School, Redoubt Elementary School, River City Academy, Skyview Middle School, Soldotna Elementary School, Soldotna High School, Soldotna Montessori Charter School, Sterling Elementary School, Tulen Charter School and Tustumena Elementary School.
East peninsula: Hope School, Moose Pass School, Seward Elementary School, Seward High School and Seward Middle School.
South peninsula: Chapman School, Fireweed Academy, Homer Flex School, Homer High School, Homer Middle School, Kachemak Selo School, McNeil Canyon Elementary School, Ninilchik School, Paul Banks Elementary School, Razdolna School, Voznesenka School and West Homer Elementary School.
The KPBSD office is also be closed Friday due to the weather conditions.
