Youth coho fishery opens Saturday

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will host a youth-only coho salmon fishery on Saturday, Aug. 2. Starting at 12:01 a.m., a portion of the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon will be reserved for youth anglers ages 15 and younger, a July 28 press release states. The fishery will remain open until 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

ADF&G staff will be present at the lagoon from 9-11 a.m. with loaner gear and to assist youth anglers as needed. Loaner fishing rods will be available for check-out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Anglers ages 16 and up are disallowed from fishing in the reserved area, but the rest of the lagoon will remain open to all anglers. Per the release, all other fishing regulations — found on page 68 of the 2025 Southcentral Alaska Sport Fishing Regulations Summary Booklet — remain in effect for the whole lagoon.

The bag and possession limits are six coho of any size. Coho salmon in the lagoon are “best targeted” by fishing herring or cured salmon roe under a bobber, or by fishing with a spinner, according to the release.
