Realizing a not-so-distant dream

The Homer Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for Fika Coffee Roasters’ new brick-and-mortar location last week.

Good news, Homer — you can now get your favorite Fika coffee year-round at their new brick-and-mortar location at ZenDen Cafe on Pioneer Avenue.

The Homer Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony last Tuesday, Oct. 7, with ZenDen’s new owners and Fika Coffee Roasters founders Sierra Moskios and Tyler Schlieman. The pair previously held a soft opening at their flagship cafe the week prior.

Chamber executive director Brad Anderson congratulated Moskios and Schlieman on their new venture and presented them with a plaque during the ribbon cutting.

“We’re really excited to bring Fika to ZenDen and serve quality specialty coffee to Homer, and be your next community gathering space,” Moskios said to those gathered to celebrate the grand opening.

A longtime favorite fixture at the Homer Farmers Market, Fika got their start in a market booth selling locally roasted coffee in the form of French press cups and pourovers, as well as loose-leaf teas. Now, the micro roastery has seen six market seasons and has upgraded from a regular booth to their “snailmobile,” a converted mobile trailer that housed their operation before they became the new owners of ZenDen Cafe. They’ve also acquired a wholesale permit that allows them to sell their specialty coffee at more than a dozen locations across the state, from the Kenai Peninsula to Fairbanks.

After the ribbon cutting, Moskios said that the graduation into a brick-and-mortar came as a surprise to her and Schlieman, as it had previously felt like a distant dream.

“We’re so grateful for the support that the community has shown us,” she said, adding that they’re excited to continue spreading the Fika love.

The Fika snailmobile is resting for the winter, but will greet the community again at the farmers market next year.
