Drop-In Options:

Families: Free admission to the Wynn Nature Center every Sunday, June 10 – end of August.

Ages 2-4. Knee-High Naturalist Program

Fridays: 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. A preschool story hour with parents that includes a story, short hike, and craft activity.

$2 donation requested.

Starting June 14- end of August

Ages 5-8. Bio-Kids

Fridays 1-3 p.m. Get a sneak peek of the secret lives of the plants, birds, and animals that live at the Wynn Nature Center. Please dress for the weather.

$10/class or $40 for 5 sessions

Starting June 14-Aug. 16.

Ages 8 – 11. Trackers

Every other Thursday 1-3 p.m.

Learn all about the animals that spend their time at the Wynn Nature Center. Learn to identify these animals by the scat, tracks, and other signs they leave behind. Please dress for the weather.

$10/class or $40 for 5 sessions

Trackers will be on June 13, June 27, July 11, July 25, and Aug. 8

Ages 6-10. S.P.I.T. Kids

Monday – Wednesday – Friday. 9:30am – noon. Enjoy a S.neak P.eek I.nto T.hings as you explore sea creatures under the dock, search for seabirds and marine mammals, investigate the beach, learn about plants, do ocean crafts and more. $10/session or $40 for 5 sessions

Ages 6-10 Summer Day Camp, 10 weeks, beginning June 10 – Aug. 15

Spend the summer outside. Weekly day camp for 6-10 year-olds. Fun-filled days outdoors: games, art, exploration from the forest of the Wynn Nature Center to the beaches on the Homer Spit.

(No Camp on July 4). 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday -Thursday*

*After Hours Care is available from 4-5 p.m. each day of camp for $10/day

$210 per week of camp – 10% discount for a sibling ($189 sibling rate).

Sign up for multiple weeks of camp and get a 10% discount for each additional week of camp. ($189/$170 sibling rate)

Ages 9-12 Junior Naturalist Summer Camp, June 27 – 30

Four-day camp with two day sessions at the Wynn Nature Center and two overnights at the Peterson Bay Field Station. Explore the diverse habitats and wildlife of the forests and beaches around Kachemak Bay. Activities include animal tracking and game cameras, forest hikes, tidepooling, outdoor fun and adventure. Perfect for a first time camper.

$450 per camper

Ages 10-12. Marine Mammal Mysteries Camp, Aug. 7 – 11

This camp is for kids who are curious about the ins and outs of marine mammals. Campers will spend four nights and five days at the Peterson Bay Field Station learning about marine mammals, being wildlife detectives and articulating (or putting together) a mystery skeleton with “Mr. Bones,” Lee Post. Includes a wildlife boat tour on Kachemak Bay to view marine mammals.

$600 per camper

Ages 12-15, Teen EcoAdventure Camp, July 22 – 31

10-day outdoor adventure and environmental stewardship camp explores the changing environment and how this connects to a most basic and delicious part of our lives — food. Activities include backcountry and yurt camping, hiking along forests, beaches, alpine, and at the foot of a glacier, berry picking and preserving, learning about salmon fishing, tidepooling, understanding ethnobotany and local edible plant uses, and having fun in the kitchen making a range of homemade foods. Throughout all this, participants learn about how different changes to the forest, beach, and marine ecosystems affect the food we eat and how our food choices affect the environment and communities around us.

$999 per camper. Price includes all boat transportation around Kachemak Bay, food, and lodging.

Family Nature Camps, June 21 – 23, July 26 – 28 or Aug. 23 – 25

Fun and adventure for the family. CACS Family Nature Camps are a great opportunity for families to be together and get outside in an amazing Kachemak Bay setting. Activities include tidepooling, hiking, campfire songs, wildlife watching plus games and hands-on activities for all ages. Families sleep in yurts. Costs include transportation, meals, and the program itself. Kayaking is available for an additional cost.

Cost: $250/adult, $150/ child (family of 3 (2 adults and 1 child) would be $650) Price includes all transportation, meals, supplies lodging and program costs for the entire weekend. Kayaking is optional and an additional $110 per person.

High School Internships

CACS offers a volunteer internship program for high school students who wish to gain more experience working in the fields of environmental education and environmental science. The internship combines working at the Carl Wynn Nature Center and the Homer Spit Yurt assisting with our popular Creature of the Dock Tours. Interns are also trained to be camp counselors for our summer camps for youth ages 9-15. Interns are encouraged to work on a special project of interest during their 6-week internship. Applicants must have completed one year of high school.

R.E.C. Room

Music Mondays. From 4-6 p.m. every Monday, volunteers come in to teach teens how to play instruments such as the guitar, bass, and drums, to singing. Sound recording equipment and synthesizer programs are available should youth desire to record their own tracks/songs.

Throughout summer, the R.E.C. Room will be open Monday through Friday from 3-6 p.m. It is a space where youth aged 12-18 can come hang out and meet other Homer-area teens, receive referrals to various resources, search for summer jobs, and get help for issues like violence and homelessness.

HCOA’s customary celebration of Mary Epperson’s birthday and 2019 Annual Meeting at HCOA Gallery 355 W. Pioneer Ave:

Outdoor Festivities from 4-7 p.m. with music, cupcakes, popcorn, and a community mural painting with artists Carla Cope and Sarah Banks.

Annual Meeting at 7 p.m., open to the public, with music and the presentation of our 2019 Annual Arts Awards.

July 2, 3 and 4: Workshops and activities with the New Old Time Chautauqua

From jugglers to magicians, from folk singers to trapeze artists, from dancers to hula-hoopists, and a 20-piece band, the New Old Time Chautauqua shows are wonder-filled events. This year they will tour Southcentral Alaska and spend a week in Homer celebrating the life and work of the late Mary Langham.

July 2, 2 p.m.: Spit Parade from Seafarer’s Memorial to Pier One; free, and all are welcome to join. Bring props and have fun.

July 2, 3:30-5:30 p.m.: Workshops at Pier One (Chautauqua will be offering over 20 workshops on tour, free and open to all ages and skill levels. Participants can attend for all or part of any workshop. Specific availability will change from town to town, but sessions in Homer on July 2 and 3 could include Acrobatics and Circus Movement, Music and Crafts, Health and Wellbeing, and tons of silly things in between.)

3-4:30 p.m. Guitar in the DADGAD Tuning with Adam Hendey (registration at 2:30 p.m.)

Intermediate level class aimed at students who already play guitar, but who are unfamiliar with the tuning. Non-guitar-playing students are also welcome to listen.
