The 70th anniversary of the World War II military campaign in the Aleutians will be the focus of a Veterans Day program, presented by Kachemak Bay Campus, Kenai Peninsula College-University of Alaska Anchorage, and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. Monday, the event includes a reception, a photographic exhibit on the war at Kiska, and three presentations:
• Michael Hawfield, KBC history professor, will speak on the Aleutian campaign;
• U.S. Army Retired Colonel John Cloe, a military historian and author of “The Aleutian Warriors,” will describe visits to the war sites;
• Poppy Benson will explain the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge’s efforts to protect the war landscapes and resources as part of WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument.
