Longtime Homer resident Mr. Paul Samuel McCartt, 83, died Friday, July 4, 2014, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer. No services are planned per Paul’s request. 

Mr. McCartt was born in Glenmary, Tenn. He graduated high school and furthered his education by attending Wittenberg University and University of Tennessee. He received a master of arts in administration from Oregon University. Paul joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17 in 1948. He was in the Army reserves and was honorably discharged as a captain when he retired in April of 1986. He taught in Chattanooga, Ohio, Oregon at the Job Corp, and as a principal and superintendant of schools in Coos Bay and Bandon, Ore. After retiring in 1986, he moved to Alaska three years later in 1989, where he substitute taught in Juneau, Seward and Anchorage schools. In 1992, he married Leanne by the Resurrection Bay in Seward. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 2127 and the Homer Elks and the American Legion in Seward. He loved fishing and motorcycled across the United States three times from Oregon. He fished in Kachemak Bay, Deep Creek, Kenai and Kasilof River. He snagged in the Resurrection Bay and was active in the Seward American Legion. He was an avid garage saler and opened the Bargain Basement in Homer. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Ada McCartt; brother, Perry McCartt, and his first wife, Earnestine McCartt. 

He is survived by his wife, Leanne “Lee” McCartt of 22 years of Homer; sons, Steven McCartt of Sedrow Wolley, Wash., and Samuel McCartt of Salem, Ore.; daughter, Sandra Wilkinson of Cottage Grove, Ore.; sisters, Paige Pelau of Harriman, Tenn., and Pauline McCartt of Harriman, Tenn.; grandchildren, Blair, Zachary, Jessica, Rebecca, Joseph and Daniel, Benjamin and Ann; and six great grandchildren. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Resources of Alaska, 1750 Abbott Road, Anchorage, AK 99507.
