Whew. Christmas is coming and New Year’s Day is on its way, all the more reason to get out and enjoy these best bets:

BEST IT’S A WRAP BET: Last-minute shoppers, after you’ve spent today or Friday looking for that perfect gift, finish the job by swinging by Ulmer’s to have volunteers with the Homer American Legion Auxiliary wrap those presents. They’ll be there from noon to 5 p.m. today and noon to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Christmas Eve. There is no charge, but donations to support veterans programs are greatly appreciated.

BEST SKATE ON BET: Want to wind down for Christmas? Head out from 1-4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 24, for skating on Beluga Lake. The Homer Hockey Associaton has cleared a space for skaters of all ages to slide away into the sunset. Skates will be available for use, and hot chocolate is served.

BEST WORK IT BET: If you’re 100, the annual Ski Your Age will be a snap: for the Century Club (100 km minus your age), put on those skis and make a few tracks. For you younger folks, it might be an effort. Ski Your Age is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 26, at the Lookout Mountain trails or on any of the other trails around town. Categories also include Ski Your Age in Kilometers, Most Kilometers as a Family and Ski 50k. Or, ski however far you want. A fundraiser for he Homer Mariner Nordic Ski Team, donations can be made at Lookout Mountain or mailing a check made out to Homer High School Ski Team to Homer High School (600 Fairview Ave, Homer AK 99603) or online via Coach Katie’s Venmo account @katie-alaska.
