Blaze tears through Homer restaurant

One person was injured during a fire at Boardwalk Fish & Chips.

The Homer Fire Department was called out at 8:38 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 5) for a report of a cooking grill on fire on the 4200 block of Homer Spit Road.

“While enroute, dispatch relayed there were occupant screams coming from inside,” according to a report from Homer Fire Department, adding it was unknown how many occupants were potentially trapped inside.

Upon arrival, Fire Chief Daniel Jager reported smoke and flames were visible through the roof of the second floor.

“An ambulance transported one occupant who had jumped from the second-floor apartment after the fire blocked the only exit from upstairs,” said a Homer Fire Department release.

The occupant was treated for non-life-threatening injuries including multiple lacerations at the South Peninsula Hospital.

Homer Tanker-28 arrived on scene within five minutes with three personnel and made a quick-fire attack with two handlines, having the fire knocked down and under control within 10 minutes of arrival.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage is estimated at approximately $150,000. It is unknown when the restaurant will reopen.

The fire department received assistance from Kachemak Emergency Services and Western Emergency Services. Homer Spit Road was briefly shut down to allow for hydrant use and keep the public away during the response.

“Homer Fire Department had other medical emergencies that required response during this fire which quickly depleted resources from Homer Fire and Kachemak Emergency Services ambulances,” according to the release.
