BEST FISHY BET: Seldovia’s Human-Powered Fishing Derby features three days of fishing in Seldovia Bay and the mouth of Kachemak Bay. Participants strive to catch the largest of any particular fish species. All winners receive a prize, plus will have their name entered in the drawing for the grand prize, a specialty kayak. No motors allowed. Come and give a try at catching a fish from your kayak, row boat, sail boat, paddle board — just don’t fish from the bank, and no motors.

BEST STAGE BET: The Pier One Theatre will present “An Ideal Husband” by Oscar Wilde starting Friday at 7:30 p.m. It is directed by Laura Norton, who is assisted by Rachel Friedlander.

BEST NEW LOOK BET: The Pratt Museum’s Grand Re-Opening Event on May 25 is an “open house” event. The Museum will provide free admission to the public, as well as musical performances, craft activities, and discovery labs throughout the day. Hot dogs, cotton candy, and popcorn will also be available, as community members are encouraged to explore our outdoor trail system. Activities will be family-friendly, and we encourage people to come and see the improvements that have been made to Homer’s community museum spaces.

BEST PLANT BASED BET: Get your hands on new plants for your windowsill at the 2019 Homer Gardening Club Annual Plant Sale. The sale starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Homer Chamber of Commerce’s parking lot, 201 Sterling Highway next to Fat Olives.

Come early for coffee and muffins.

This is the club’s major fundraiser that supports the wide range of speakers at monthly meetings, the Harvest Dinner, and plantings at the Baycrest Garden. Open to the public and everyone is invited.

BEST FUNNY BONE BET: Keep your wit sharp by dropping in on Improv Playpen, a weekly drop-in class for anyone interested in learning some basic improvisation skills. The only requirements are a willingness to laughter and openness to playfulness. No experience necessary. Only collaborative play, learning and fun.

Classes are led and directed by members of Fresh Produce, Homer’s long-lived, heralded and professional performance and teaching improv troupe.
