The Homer High School varsity volleyball team took third place in the Southcentral Conference Tournament this past weekend, improving to 30-17-3 overall. However, the Lady Mariners will not travel to Anchorage this week for the state tournament.

Homer defeated Mountain City Christian Academy 3-2 on Thursday, Nov. 6, but fell 3-1 to Nikiski.

The Lady Mariners won both of their games on Friday, defeating Grace Christian 3-0 and Seward 3-1.

Kenai Central topped Homer 3-0 in their final game of the tournament on Saturday. Head coach Brenna Dornellas said Monday that the at-large bid went to Kotzebue, officially cutting off Homer from a chance to continue on to state.

Dornellas was named Southcentral Volleyball of the Year. Six Homer players were named to the first and second All-Southcentral Conference teams.

Juniors Swift Blackstock and Reilly Sue Baker, both outside hitters, were selected for First Team All-Southcentral Conference, alongside setter and Homer High junior Alysha Nyvall.

Juniors Madalyn Miotke and Jaelynn Kennon, both middle blockers, were selected for Second Team All-Southcentral Conference, as well as sophomore libero Piper Fuchs.

Fuchs was named Homer’s Player of the Match for the Nov. 7 game against Seward. Opposite hitter Almalinda Norman was also named Homer’s Player of the Match for the Nov. 8 game against Kenai Central.
