Homer High School

Wrestling:

The Homer Mariners wrestling team placed fifth overall at last weekend’s Monster Mash Duals in Anchorage.

From Assistant Coach Chris Perk:

“The past weekend the Mariners took part in the Monster Mash Duals at South Anchorage. Battling over the weekend were the top four 4A schools and the top two small schools.

“Homer had to forfeit four weight classes for most of the tournament and was still able to win four duals including a 45 – 36 win over defending state champions Bethel Warriors. Other dual wins came against Eagle River, Kodiak and Palmer. Many of the matches featured state placers from 4A and 3A. Going undefeated over the weekend was Junior Luciano Fasulo and Seniors Levi King (in the) 195 (weight class) and Kyle Wells (in the) 220 (class). Luciano defeated Sam Sisco from Colony and Christian Alexander from Wasilla both top 4A wrestlers in that weight class. King and Wells dominated their opponents.

“Seth Inama won seven matches to one loss. His one loss was to top ranked 4A competitor Vince Cramer from Colony. Inama beat State Finalist from Lathrop Jacob Spencer 3-2. Inama was trailing 2-0, but was able to escape and score a takedown with less than 10 second left in the match. He went on to win two more matches in overtime.

“Tristen Cook at 182 lost his first match of the season to Levi Farris, last year’s 4A 152-pound state champions. The match was tied 1-1 when Farris was able to counter a cook throw attempt for a two-point takedown. Tristen won seven other matches over the weekend. His sister McKenzie wrestling (at) varsity 152 scored a couple of fireman’s carries before pinning Angel Espinoza from Eagle River. Her pin helped the team seal a 45 – 30 win over Eagle River.

“McKenzie was ranked (eighth) in the Nation at 144 pounds in the Pre-Season National Girls Prep poll. Senior Chris Cudaback, (at) 170, beat state placer from Palmer Jason Watkins 3-2. Cudaback went 4–2 on the weekend by sat out his last two with a shoulder injury. Wayne Newman, (at) 126, won six matches and nearly won a seventh. He was tied with Isaac Rodman from Wasilla 1-1 before his opponent nailed a head and arm with less than 30 seconds remaining. Newman beat Theodore Cha from South who was a state placer last year.

“Junior Hunter Harrington, (at) 195, won the JV Pumpkin Patch scramble pinning all five of his opponent in the first period. Alex Moseley, (at) 120, beat three opponents to one loss en route to a third place finish. The Mariners head to the ACS Invite this weekend to participate in the biggest small school tourney in the state. The Mariners are looking for their third straight ACS Invite Title.”

Swim/Dive:

The Homer girls swim and dive team took fourth place overall at this past weekend’s Region III Championship meet in Palmer. The boys took seventh, and nine members from the whole team will advance to the state championships.

Two previous school records were broken in the process, including the girls 200-yard medley relay and the girls 1-meter dive.
