Dixon, Wiebe win Homer Mariner Triathlon

Dozens of endurance enthusiasts rose early on Saturday to swim, bike and run in the annual Homer Mariner Triathlon.

Originally scheduled for earlier this month and postponed due to poor air quality caused by area wildfires, the race benefits the Homer Mariner swim and dive team. It consists of a 1,000-yard swim in the pool at the Kate Kuhns Aquatic Center, a 15-mile bike leg and a five-mile run from the Homer Spit back up to Homer High School.

Homer residents Jane Wiebe and Adam Dixon won the triathlon in the ironwomen and ironmen categories, respectively. The top finishing team was HHS Girls, consisting of student Madison Story as well as Alayne Tetor and Saundra Choate-Hudson.

Wiebe finished the triathlon in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 37 seconds, and Dixon claimed his title in 1:43:44. Kristen Buckwalter was second for the women with a time of 2:09:27, while Brandy McGee was third at 2:19:29.

For the men, Dan Miotke took second place with a time of 1:51:11, and Michael McGuire was third in 1:52:38.

Wiebe is a long-time participant in not only the Mariner Triathlon, but many of the endurance events put on the Homer area.

“It’s kind of fun to just challenge yourself to do it,” she said. “… This is like a festival of exercise. And those of us that like to do endurance exercise, it’s just fun.”

This was Dixon’s third time running, swimming and biking the triathlon. He said the temperature on Saturday was perfect for the event. He only started doing ironman events about three years ago.

Dixon said it’s the camaraderie that he enjoys about locally held triathlons and other events.

“You know the guys you race against,” he said. “Like the local guys here, we’re always competing against each other. Like we want to beat each other and so we push each other.”
