Assembly to discuss short-term rental tax on Tuesday

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly will consider a resolution during their next meeting on Tuesday that would place a question on the October ballot asking whether the borough should tax short-term accommodation rentals.

The resolution, available at kpb.legistar.com, describes a proposed tax of up to 12%, citing the borough’s reliance on visitors for its economy and the impact of those visitors on public services.

Speaking to the Soldotna City Council on Wednesday, assembly member and sponsor Tyson Cox said that revenue from the tax wouldn’t be allocated to any particular fund, and instead would be added to the general fund, where it could offset solid waste costs and potentially reduce the borough’s mill rate.

The resolution will be introduced as new business and discussed during the Tuesday meeting of the assembly in the Betty J. Glick Assembly Chambers at 6 p.m. on June 18.
