Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Peter Micciche presents an award for the varsity Mariners winning the 2024 state championship game to Homer High School Athletic Director and head football coach Justin Zank on Thursday, Nov. 21 at Homer High School.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly commended the Homer High School varsity football team at their last regular meeting on Nov. 12 for earning their second state title and being the 2024 Alaska Division III State Champions.

The commending resolution was sponsored by borough Mayor Peter Micciche and Kelly Cooper, who represents Homer on the assembly.

The commendation notes the Mariners’ “exemplary performance” in both the championship game and in winning an academic award with a 3.37 team grade point average as “a credit to their parents, coaches, school and community.”

Cooper and Micciche also presented certificates to the varsity team on Thursday, Nov. 21 at Homer High School.

”The assembly and the mayor are really proud of Homer High School’s performance, and equally pleased with them having the winning GPA for their team as well,” Cooper said on Saturday. “I just think they have done a great job … (it’s) pretty impressive.”

The Homer varsity team played against the Kenai Kardinals in a “hard-fought” game on Oct. 19 and defeated the Kards 16-0.

“Both teams were great representatives of the Kenai Peninsula community,” the commendation states.

The assembly also extended congratulations to Kenai Central High School “for an excellent season and runner-up finish.”

A copy of the commending resolution was provided to Homer High School Principal Douglas Waclawski and head football coach Justin Zank.
