Deadline for Anchorage Symphony music scholarship March 15

Alaska high school music students have until March 15 to apply for a scholarship supporting young Alaska musicians, the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra announced in a press release on Feb. 9.

The 37th annual Mary and Lucian Cassetta Music Scholarship Competition will award to a youth musician a $1,000 scholarship — paid directly to a school or instruction program to cover tuition, musical instruction or other direct musical expenses.

The scholarship, which aims to encourage the development of talent in young Alaska musicians, also invites the selected student to perform a recital hosted by the Anchorage Concert Chorus.

Open to both instrumentalists and vocalists, the competition is open to seniors who “possess the talent, dedication and desire to make a serious commitment to an advanced study program at a recognized music school or music camp,” the release said.

Applicants will perform in a closed audition and undergo a short oral interview. Auditions will be held March 28 at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.

Competition applicants must provide a completed application, which can be found online at https://www.anchoragesymphony.org/scholarships.

Applicants must also provide a recommendation — submitted directly to the scholarship committee — from the individual’s music instructor on the degree of the student’s commitment. Recommendations must be submitted via email to: aso@youraso.org or mailed to:
