It’s beginning to look a lot like the holiday season, and the Homer Chamber of Commerce is advancing that vibe with the announcement last week of their “festive lineup” of holiday events.

In an effort to both support local businesses and bring families together, a press release posted Friday, Nov. 14, says, the chamber organizes community celebrations and invites residents and visitors alike to participate in Homer festive traditions, fun activities and hometown cheer.

This Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 28-30, the chamber will host their annual Shop Local Bingo, a “fun and rewarding way to support local businesses while entering to win fantastic prizes.”

Starting next Friday morning, community members can pick up bingo cards at any of this year’s 36 participating businesses and, while shopping, get their cards stamped. Each completed bingo card earns shoppers a chance to win prizes. Participating community members should return their completed bingo cards to the chamber by Dec. 3. Winners will be announced during the annual Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony on Dec. 4.

At the last Homer City Council meeting, Mayor Rachel Lord also proclaimed Nov. 29 as Small Business Saturday, a day typically observed the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

“Small businesses are the backbone of Alaska’s economy,” Lord wrote in her proclamation. “By choosing to spend locally … we sustain the economic ecosystem that allows Homer to remain both a working waterfront and a cultural destination. Small Business Saturday offers Homer residents and our winter visitors a meaningful opportunity to support the merchants, restaurateurs and service providers who keep our ‘cosmic hamlet by the sea’ thriving year-round.”

The annual Holiday Tree Lighting will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Dec. 4 at the chamber, located at 201 Sterling Highway. Featuring a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, courtesy of the Homer Volunteer Fire Department, live music performances by the KP Brass Band and the Homer High School Choir, hot drinks and s’more cups, and a kids’ craft table, this “warm and welcoming” event is a “cherished” Homer tradition and a “perfect” way for the community to kick off the holiday season.
