Homer High celebrates prom with ‘The Great Gatsby’ theme

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel was set on Long Island, New York, and prom attendees dressed to the theme

Homer High’s prom took place on Saturday, April 6 on the stage in the Homer Mariner Theatre.

The theater was decked out in black and gold for this year’s “Great Gatsby” theme. More than most years, students dressed to the theme, shimmering in Gatsby colors.

Senior couple Malachi Raymond and Elsa Milne were crowned as king and queen, and junior couple Michael Reutov and Katelyn Marroquin were crowned as prince and princess.

Students danced the night away, with one student sharing that the dance was “pretty lit.” Most students attended a dinner and took photos at the beach before the dance, then returned to the dinner location for more food and laughs.

The week before prom was a bit hectic for the Juniors Prom Committee with a last-minute venue change and miscommunication.

Fortunately, community members came to the rescue and were a huge help.

Bubbles Balloons donated a balloon arch, Chris Kincaid took photos, and Scott Fraley provided the beats for the dance.

Students and staff donated decorations and their time to set up the theater.

The prom committee was overwhelmed by the support they received in light of the challenging last-minute change.

The committee had been meeting and planning since August, with seniors saving since their freshman year all for that one night.
