Spurr — the 1-and-a-half-year-old Appaloosa colt who went missing Jan. 19 — was found and reunited with his owners Saturday, Feb. 1.
Kate Klann, the horse’s owner, said a 12-year-old boy spotted Spurr grazing under a tree by Beluga Lake. Together with friend Jordan Barrowcliff, the family worked to gently approach Spurr, halter him and bring him home.
Klann said Spurr appeared healthy and uninjured, and was happy to see his caretaker, Klann’s daughter, Judah.
The community banded together on foot and horseback and with planes and drones to find Spurr after he went missing in downtown Homer on Jan. 19. Klann estimates that her daughters rode around 40 miles on horseback over the last two weeks, searching for the missing colt. She added that they’re grateful to the community for helping aid in the rescue.
“It was so helpful and generous of people to contribute so much time and effort into helping us look for this horse. I think most people were surprised to realize he was right in the middle of town, hiding out. But people were tackling some really difficult terrain and places that are hard to access, just looking for signs, and so we really appreciate all the effort.”
