Alaska 20 qualifies for state

Alaska 20, which has a number of Homer players including recent Homer High graduate Mose Hayes, has qualified for the Alliance Baseball League State Tournament.

Alaska 20, which put up a 5-5 record in league play, secured the No. 7 seed at the eight-team tournament.

Alaska 20 is normally the American Legion Twins, but there was no American Legion baseball this season due to the new coronavirus pandemic. According to Alaska 20 general manager Lance Coz, the only year the Twins, and now Alaska 20, didn’t make the state tournament was in 1986.

The state tournament will use a round-robin format with two divisions.

Alaska 20 is in the Alyeska division with No. 2 South, No. 3 Eagle River and No. 6 Chugiak.

Alaska 20 plays Eagle River at 5 p.m. Friday, South at 11 a.m. Saturday and Chugiak at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Tuesday, the winner of the Denali division plays Alyeska runner-up at 2 p.m., and the winner of the Alyeska division plays Denali runner-up at 5:30 p.m.

Wednesday, the winners of those two games face off for the championship at 5:30 p.m.

The Denali division has No. 1 Dimond, No. 4 West, No. 5 Wasilla and No. 8 Juneau.
