Hansel and Gretzky win jamboree’s first-place trophy

Diva’s Women’s Hockey hosted the 9th Annual Jamboree Tournament last weekend. More than 90 players traveled from Kenai, Anchorage, Palmer and the Valley. This tournament, sponsored by Beluga Lake Lodge, is a major fundraiser for Homer Women’s Hockey.

This year, eight teams divided into two divisions played for the championship trophy. Teams were sponsored by Grace Ridge Brewery, Homer’s Jeans, Fritz Creek General Store, Beluga Lake Lodge, and the Salty Dawg. Teams faced off against all teams in their division for a division ranking. By the end of 12 games of regulation games, standings were:

Once Upon a Time Division:

Fourth: Willy Wonka and the Slapshot Factory

Third: Alice in Hockeyland

Second: Little Red Riding Hoodlums

First: Hansel and Gretzky

Happily Ever After Division:

Fourth: Goldihooks and the Three Backcheckers

Third: Snow White and the Seven Dekers

Second: Pippi Highsticking

First: Center-ella Story

The crossover game for fourth place was held early on Sunday between Willy Wonka and Goldihooks. Willy Wonka took the lead with a goal early in the first period by Homer’s Marina Polushkin, and although Goldihooks answered when Roz Barnhill scored a goal second period, they were unable to match the remaining goals. Willy Wonka scored twice in both the second and third period, ending the game 5 to 1 for Willy Wonka. Additional Willy Wonka goals were scored by Kimberly Fannon, Nora Rojek, Christy Newell, and Lisa Oakley.

MVPs for the game were Kimberly Fannon from Kenai and Roz Barhill from Anchorage.

In the crossover game for third place, Snow White faced Alice in Hockeyland. The game was tied 2 to 2 after the first two periods with goals scored for Snow White by Sue Rennolds and Emily Austin and by Kayla Owens and Anne Williams for Alice. With two minutes left in the game, Snow White put in a power line, allowing Cathy Almasy to find the net for the winning goal.

MVPs for the game were Cathy Almasy from Anchorage (Snow) and Kari Dendrant from Homer (Alice).

In the high scoring crossover game for second place, Little Red Riding Hoodlums dominated Pippi Highsticking by scoring early and often. Goals for the Hoodlums were by Michelle Hansen, Emily Hutchison, Meghan Owens, Heather Marron, and Amanda Yauney. Pippi Highsticking were able to find the twine late third period with a goal by Robin Dublin.

MVPs for the game were Meghan Owens from Anchorage (Little Red) and Anne Stefanich from Anchorage (Pippi).

The championship game between Center-ella and Hansel and Gretzky was fast paced and brought out the fans. The first goal of the game was scored early by Center-ellas’ Andrea Stineff. Shortly after Heather Johnson from Hansel and Gretzky found the net, ending first period with a tie. Second period was a big one for Center-ella, and both Nichole Rose and Jessie Cashman scored, leaving the Gretzkys short two goals at the end of the second period. Both teams fought hard third period, but neither was able to score. Final score 3 to 1 with Center-ella taking home the first place trophy.
