Upcoming events

Volleyball: The Lady Mariners host Seward High School this Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the Alice Witte Gymnasium. Then on Saturday, the team will travel for an away game against Nikiski at 2 p.m.

Swimming: The swim and dive team will compete in the Region III Invitational at Kenai Central High School on Thursday, Oct. 31.

Wrestling: The Homer wrestling team is hosting the Round Robin Rumble this Saturday starting at noon at the high school.

Swim and dive:

The Homer swim and dive team competed in the Bartlett/Chugiak Swimming Diving Invitational this past Saturday at Bartlett High School in Anchorage. The girls team placed sixth overall at the meet, which had 480 athletes entered.

Homer’s Madison Story won the girls 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 13.98 seconds. She also took second place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.28.

The Homer girls also had a 200 medley relay team comprised of Kaylin Anderson, Story, Adeline Berry and Delta Fabich, which took fourth place in 1:57.70. A relay team for the 200 freestyle relay, made up of the same swimmers, took fifth place in that race in 1:49.15.

Volleyball:

Last Thursday, Homer volleyball defeated Seward 3-0 in Southcentral Conference action with game scores of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-18. The win brought the Mariners to 4-1 standings in the conference (6-4 overall) and dropped the Seahawks to 1-5 and 5-12.

The Homer volleyball team also competed last Saturday in the Lady Grizzly Invitational in Anchorage.

Soldotna took second place in the platinum bracket at the event, while Nikiski won the gold bracket and Homer came in fifth in the platinum bracket.

Homer lost to Bartlett with scores of 20-11, 18-20, 15-10 before defeating Valdez 12-20, 20-13, 15-7. The team then lost to Wasilla 20-9, 20-13.

The Mariners were third in Pool B play with a 7-2 record. They lost to Sitka 25-17, then went on to beat Cordova 25-12, Houston 25-10, Kodiak via forfeit, and Monroe Catholic 25-21. The team then lost to Palmer 25-14, beat Nikiski 25-22, defeated Seward 25-7 and defeated Grace Christian 25-8.

In other volleyball play, the Ninilchik volleyball team scored a five-set victory over Cook Inlet Academy last Monday at Cook Inlet Academy. The scores were 23-25, 25-9, 25-16, 19-25 and 15-12.
