Upcoming events

Basketball: The girls’ team will compete in the Grace Hardwood Classic this weekend starting today and continuing Friday and Saturday. The boys will play an away game against Kenai Central High School tonight at 6 p.m. They won’t play next until they host Grace Christian School on Friday, Feb. 22.

Cross-country skiing: Homer’s cross-country ski team will compete in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Championships this weekend in Soldotna.

In review

Basketball:

The Alice Witte Gymnasium saw a lot of action over the weekend during the Homer Winter Carnival Basketball Tournament.

Homer hosted players from Galena, Sitka and Seward over three days.

Thursday

The Homer boys lost 45-41 to Galena, while the Seward boys beat Sitka 63-51. Connor Spanos led the Seward boys with 17 points, while Sam Koster added 12 and Bjorn Nilsson had 10. Homer got 11 points from Seth Adkins but three different Galena players all contributed 12 points, led by Joe Riddle with 13.

For the girls, Sitka defeated Seward 50-33 and Galena prevailed over Homer 37-20. Riley Von Borstel led the Seahawks with 12 points, and Shelly Sewell contributed seven.

Seward took an early 9-5 lead thanks to seven points from Von Borstel, but by halftime Sitka took the helm 17-15. Sitka won the third quarter 13-6 to pad its lead. Pearle Green led Galena with 20 points, while Shelly Johnson led the Mariners with eight.

Friday

Friday let the Mariners see more success, with the girls defeating Seward 43-28, and the Homer boys defeating Seward 51-35. Senior Stanley Swoboda sunk five three-pointers to lead Homer with 17 points, while Connor Spanos led Seward with 12 points and Sam Koster added 10.

In the girls game, Marina Carroll led the Mariners with 19 points.

In other games, the Galena boys beat Sitka 57-47 while the Galena girls beat Sitka 46-43.

Saturday

The Galena Hawks finished their weekend in Homer 3-0, with the boys beating Seward 46-34 and the girls prevailing 54-33 over Seward to capture the girls crown.

The Homer girls lost 48-15 to Sitka Saturday night at the tournament and finished 1-2 overall, while the Homer boys lost 44-35 to Sitka.

Galena’s Pearle Green scored 22 points to lead the Hawks. Riley Von Borstel got 12 points for the Seahawks.

The Sitka girls got points from all 10 players in their win over Homer, led by the 15 of Abby Forrester. Marina Carroll had six points for the Mariners.

For the boys, Galena was led by Joe Riddle’s 12 points, while Connor Spanos led Seward with 14 points.
