Homer boys cagers get 1st win of season

The host Homer boys basketball team defeated Seward 40-31 on Saturday in Peninsula Conference play for the first win of the Mariners’ season.

The Mariners move to 1-1 in the Peninsula Conference and 1-7 overall, while Seward is now 1-2 and 2-4.

Homer led 20-16 at the half, and clung to a 29-25 lead heading to the fourth quarter before closing on an 11-6 kick.

Morgan Techie led the Mariners with 10, while Lucas Story had eight, Lance Seneff had six, Niko Sulczynski and Nathan Overson had five, and Trent Fell and Theo McDonough had three.

For Seward, Ben Ambrosiani had 12, Nick Ambrosiani had eight, Ozzy Deel had seven and Emerson Cross had four.

The visiting Seahawks notched a Peninsula Conference victory Saturday to move to 2-1 in the league and 5-2 overall, while Homer dropped to 0-2 and 2-5.

Seward got off to a slow start, trailing 9-4 at halftime, but won the second half 27-16.

Hailey Ingalls had 14 to pace the Seahawks, while Lena Jagielski had 11, Robin Cronin had five and Ava Jagielski had one.

For Homer, Bethany Engebretsen had seven, Minadora Reutov had six, Channing Lowney had four, and Sydney Shelby, Lillie Mae Kuhn, Emily Owens and Gracie Miotke had two.

Both the Homer girls and boys take a four-game trip to Southeast this week. The Mariners play at Sitka Wednesday and Thursday, then at Mt. Edgecumbe on Friday and Saturday.
