Homer hosts 2024 statewide youth hockey tournament

The Homer Hockey Association hosted the 2024 Alaska State Hockey Association 14UA tournament held at Kevin Bell Arena on March 1-3. The event featured 11 teams and 160 players from all regions Alaska from as far as Fairbanks, Juneau and Kodiak.

Tournament co-director Matt Clarke reported that the championship game was held on Sunday featuring a matchup of the top seed, undefeated, Anchorage Hockey Association Comets vs. Homer’s Glacier Kings. The Comets are coached by Marc Dunne and the Glacier Kings are coached by Mike Spencer and David Clemmens.

The Comets won the championship game 3 to 1 over Homer. The Comets’ Parker Finch scored the game’s first goal in the first period. In the second period, the Comets scored their second goal, by Jason Brotherton. Homer’s Van Spencer scored with 9:36 in the third period to bring the score to 2-1. Anchorage quickly countered, scoring their third goal at 8:56 in the third period. The game remained without score and ended in a 3-1 victory for the Comets.

Other teams that participated at the conference included the Alaska Grizzlies, Alaska Avalanche, Hockey Club Fairbanks Team Goble, Ice Hawks, Juneau Capitals, MAHA Eagles, Kodiak Hockey League, Mustangs and the Alaska Pioneers.

Homer will host another tournament for the Alaska 12UA league March 15-18.
