Homer victorious in pared down volleyball jamboree

Event changed after central peninsula sports got canceled

The Lady Mariners varsity volleyball team came was victorious last weekend in a pared down version of its annual jamboree.

The jamboree was originally scheduled as a local tournament to kick off the volleyball season with teams from across the Kenai Peninsula participating. When the central peninsula moved into the red, or high-risk zone, in terms of community spread of COVID-19, however, sports were shut down for the participating high schools in Nikiski, Kenai and Soldotna.

The jamboree scheduled for last Saturday was changed to a matchup between Homer High School and Seward High School last Friday in the Alice Witte Gymnasium.

Starting off strong, the Mariners cruised to a 25-11 victory in the first game, and finished out the day with a 25-17 win in the second varsity game. The C teams, junior varsity teams and varsity teams from both schools played two games each.

The Homer teams are scheduled for a conference away game against Seward this Saturday as well. The C team plays at 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by JV at 2 p.m. and varsity at 3 p.m. in Seward.
