Mariners finish 2nd in Rumble

The Mariner Wrestling team could be accused of not sharing with others last weekend after winning 15 medals en route to a solid second-place finish at the Best Western Bidarka’s Round Robin Rumble. With 178 points, the Marinersi finished  behind the top 4A team in the state: the South Anchorage Wolverines, with 267 points. Seven other teams competed in Homer.

Leading the way were Timmy Woo, at 152 pounds, and Wayne Newman, at 98.  Both were champions in their weight classes. Also making it to the finals in the varsity bracket was Kyle Wells, 182 pounds, who finally lost to a South opponent. Joining him with a second place was Tristen Cook, 160 pounds. Cook lost to Rami Pellumbi, a returning 4A champ, but only by a 4-3 margin. Levi King, 170 pounds, had a strong showing, finishing in second place as well.

Making the finals in the JV bracket were Chris Cudaback, 152 pounds, and Jadzia Martin, at 113. Cudaback won the JV Championship, while Martin lost to a Nikiski opponent in the finals. Martin was bumping up a weight class.

Homer loaded up in the third place department. Freshman Seth Inama, 106 pounds, Ian Stovall, 113 pounds, Luciano Fasulo, 120, and McKenzie Cook, 138, each earned a bronze medal in his or her respective weight classes. Sophomores earning third place were Teddy Croft, 160 pounds, and Wyatt Alborn, 170. Junior Jared Brant, 132 pounds, lost a match to returning state champion Seth Hutchison of Soldotna, dropping into the consolation bracket and coming back to earn a third-place finish. Teammate Josiah Stauffer, 170 pounds and a first year wrestler, won third place in the JV bracket.

Friday night the Mariners hosted three duals, winning against Soldotna 60-18 and Houston 42-40 before losing to South Anchorage 57-19. The Mariners picked up some quality wins as Luciano Fasulo defeated David Lincoln of South 8-6. Kyle Wells beat No. 6-ranked Ritter from Houston in a decision. This week the team heads to Seward to participate in a series of seven duals throughout the weekend.
