Nome basketball sweeps Mariners

The visiting Nome girls and boys basketball teams swept Homer on Saturday.

For Nome, Nevcyn Lie had nine points, while Kellie Miller had eight, Taylor Gorn and Asa Hukill each had seven, Ayla Knodel had three and Kamylee Walters had two.

For the Mariners, Lawson Alexson-Walls poured in 19, while Hannah Stonorov had six, Minadora Reutov had five, and Sydney Shelby and Bethany Engebretsen each had two.

The Nome boys defeated the Mariners 89-47.

Leading scorers for Nome were Richard Cross with 18 points, Orson Hoogendorn with 17, Finn Gregg and Jade Greene with 13, and Ethan Hannon with 12.

For Homer, Lucas Story had 11, Trent Fell had nine, Lance Seneff and Mo Techie had six, Riley Huffman, Einar Pederson and Nathan Overson had four, and Theo McDonough had three.

Both Homer teams also had made a surprise appearance to open their seasons at the Craig Jung Kenai River Challenge at Kenai Central on Thursday.

The Houston girls and boys couldn’t travel to the tournament due to school closures, so the Mariners filled in at the last minute. The girls lost to Soldotna 49-24, while the boys lost to Soldotna 54-33.

Everything ended up balanced in the end, because another school from the Matanuska-Susitna valleys — Redington — was scheduled to play at Homer on Friday but the games were canceled when the Huskies couldn’t make the trip.

The Stars girls received 13 points apiece from Katelyn Morrison and Josie Sheridan, 11 points from Morgan Lemm, six points from Tanner Inman, four points from Anaulie Sedivy and two from Annie Burns.

For Homer, Minadora Reutov had 12, Lawson Alexson-Walls had five, Hannah Stonorov had three, and Lillie Mae Kuhn and Bethany Engebretsen each had two.

The Stars boys received 13 from Jakob Brown, 10 apiece from Zac Buckbee and Izaiah Gilbert, six each from Lokeni Wong and Andrew Pieh, four from Will Inman, three from Jace O’Reagan and two from Eli Corbett.

For Homer, Trent Fell had 11, Riley Huffman had eight, Nathan Overson had six, Lucas Story had three, Einar Pederson had two and Lance Seneff had one.
