Runners, bikers skiers welcome warmer weather

In a celebration of spring, the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club’s Sea to Ski Triathalon rang in the warm weather with a wet run, a muddy bike ride and a slushy ski on Sunday.

“The weather was great for this race. The trail slowed down at the end because of the new snow, but overall it was great,” said race coordinator Mike Byerly.

Fifty-five racers registered for the 5K run, 7K bike, and 5K ski from Mariner’s Beach to the DOT trailhead. Participation was lower than usual said Byerly and he attributes it to the fact that the race was held on Easter Sunday.

“My second year organizing we had record participation numbers. This year we didn’t see as many high schoolers as I would like,” said Byerly.

Sea to Ski has been a tradition for KNSC for more than 20 years. Started by Molly and Dave Brann, the triathlon has come to mean the end of the ski season. This is Byerly’s fourth year organizing the event and he doesn’t have any plans of giving up his position any time soon.
