SoHi, Nikiski football get wins; Seward, Homer lose

Nikiski senior Dwyght Mullins scored four rushing touchdowns to lead visiting Nikiski to a 32-22 victory over Seward last Friday in nonconference action.

The two teams both play in the Division II Denali Conference, but Friday’s game was nonconference. The two teams will play their conference game in Week 8. Nikiski is 1-1, while Seward is 0-2.

The back-and-forth game was played in varying intensities of rain and plenty of turnovers resulted.

The Bulldogs went up 20-0 in the first quarter. Quarterback Braeden Porter, who did not finish the game due to injury, scored on a 2-yard run with 7:37 left in the first. Mullins then scored on a 6-yard run with 4:20 left in the first and a 32-yard run with 3:58 left in the first.

Seward then stormed back in the second quarter behind the running of Gideon Schrock. Schrock had a 12-yard run and a pair of 10-yard runs to put the Seahawks up 22-20 at halftime.

Nikiski came out and dominated the second half on defense, while Mullins scored twice in the third quarter. With 4:27 left, Mullin scored from 2 yards out, then with 2:33 left, Mullins scored from 59 yards out.

Soldotna 54, Service 14

The visiting Stars got a dominant performance from Brayden Taylor in winning a nonconference contest Friday night.

Soldotna, a Division II school, improved to 2-0 with the victory over Division I Service. The Cougars fall to 0-2.

Taylor had two touchdown passes, two touchdown runs and two interceptions.

The Stars took a 19-0 lead after the first quarter.

Gehret Medcoff got things started with a 4-yard run with 9:30 left in the first quarter, with Jace O’Reagan kicking the extra point. Elijah Lee then blocked a punt to set up a 4-yard touchdown catch by Aidan Gavalis from Zac Buckbee. Wyatt Faircloth then finished off the first quarter with a 2-yard run with 0:42 to play.

Service started out the second quarter with a 1-yard run by RJ Fine to make it 19-6 with 10:51 left in the quarter.

Medcoff then scored on a 1-yard and O’Reagan made the kick for a 26-6 lead with 6:43 left in the half.

Andrew Pieh then closed the half with a pair of touchdown catches from Taylor. The catches were for 11 and 14 yards and kicks from O’Reagan made the score 40-6 at the half.

Taylor then put the Stars up 54-6 after the third quarter to create a running clock for the fourth quarter. Taylor had runs of 2 and 25 yards for the scores, while O’Reagan had the kicks.

In the fourth quarter, Jonathon Tautua scored on a 12-yard run for the Cougars.

Houston 46, Homer 0

The host Hawks rolled to a Mid Alaska Conference victory over the Mariners last Friday night.

Houston moves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Mariners fall to 1-1 and 0-1.
