‘Spikefest’ brings weekend of volleyball to Ninilchik

Eight teams took to Ninilchik School’s volleyball courts over the weekend for the school’s annual Spikefest. 

Birchwood won the tournament, with Su Valley in second. Sand Point returned home with the sportsmanship trophy, “But I told the crowd that I was impressed by the play and sportsmanship of all the girls,” said Jeff Ambrosier, principal of Ninilchik School. “(These were the) best behaving athletes in the four years that we’ve been doing the tournament.”

Named to the all-tourney team:

Kortney Craig, Birchwood;

Audrea Roberts, Birchwood;

Madison Ferguson, Birchwood;

Richele McGahan, Cook Inlet Academy;

Krista Sinclair, Ninilchik;

Ajiel Basmayor, Ninilchik;

Dantezza Pangilinan, Sand Point;

Justina Parami, Sand Point;

Sarena Drover, Su Valley;

Ruby Matthews, Su Valley;

Kiara Nelson, Tok; and

Alexa Peet, Tok.

The 19-game event was organized by tournament director Nick Finley. Ambrosier also noted the efforts of Barb Lamont, Becky Hilbrink and Patty Tilbury “for working to feed roughly 85 people all weekend.”
