Upcoming events

Cross-country skiing — The Mariner skiers are next scheduled to compete on Jan. 18 and 19 at the Grace Invite.

Basketball — The girls varsity basketball team will play Kenai Central High School at 6:30 p.m. this Friday at home. The varsity boys will play at 8 p.m. Next Thursday, the boys will host Mt. Edgecumbe at 7 p.m. at home.

Hockey — The Homer hockey team is scheduled to host Kenai Central High School at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 8 at the Kevin Bell Ice Arena.

In review

Basketball

The girls basketball team took first place last weekend at the Service Cougar Tip Off, beating Eagle River, Service and Redington.

The girls claimed the victory with a 30-28 win over Redington on Saturday. On Friday, they beat Service 30-19. In that game, Marina Carroll led the Mariners with 16 points.

Also Friday, they boys team defeated Redington 47-33 in the consolation bracket of the tournament. Daniel Reutov led Homer with 12 points for Homer, while Japheth McGhee had 11.

In Saturday’s win over Redington, Laura Inama led the team with 11 points for for Homer.

In the boys consolation championship, Point Hope beat Homer 46-42. Daniel Reutov led Homer with 11.

Cross-country ski

Homer’s Lady Mariners had a strong showing at a cross-country ski meet held at the Lookout Trails at Ohlson Mountain after a last minute event switch. The Candy Cane Scramble that was originally scheduled for Friday at Tsalteshi Trails in Soldotna had to be moved due to lack of snow.

Junior Autumn Daigle took first place for the varsity girls, finishing the snowy 4.2 kilometer course in 15 minutes, 41 seconds.

Kenai’s Maria Salzetti took second with a time of 16:07, and Homer’s Katia Holmes took third place in 16:46.

Homer’s Zoe Stonorov finished with a time of 17:14, and Brita Restad in 18:03.

Andy Super, the only boys varsity member skiing at the event, finished with a time of 16:24.

Junior varsity skiers started at the same time as varsity skiers, but tackled a shorter 2.7K course. For the JV girls, Homer’s Sienna Carey took first with a time of 10:02. Kara Super finished in 11:37.
