Homer High School

Wrestling:

From assistant Coach Chris Perk:

“The Mariners placed (second) overall at the 30-team ACS Invite, the biggest small school tourney in the state. Bethel, the defending 1A/2A/3A State Champions, scored 214 points, while Homer accumulated 199 points.

“Homer is still missing four of the 15 weight classes. Juniors Wayne Newman, at 126, and Luciano Fasulo, at 132, both earned championship titles. Newman defeated Riley Rust from Monroe 4-2 in the finals, his single leg takedown in the first period provided the difference. Fasulo dominated Sean Dorsey from Glennallen 14-4. Fasulo is now 23-0 on the season.

“Seniors Chris Cudaback, at 170, Tristen Cook, at 182 and Levi King, at 195m all placed second overall losing in the finals. Kyle Wells, at 220, battled back to place third after a defeat by eventual champion Tanner Clark from Monroe. Sophomore Mose Hayes at 138 came back for third place in one of the biggest weight classes at the tournament. Junior Seth Inama at 120 placed fourth overall losing two matches in overtime, both to Bethel opponents.

“The girls had their first tourney of the season. Senior Alex Moseley at 120 pinned all four of her opponents in the first period. Her aggressive nature lead her to ultimate dominance as she did not render a single point against her. Junior 152 McKenzie Cook won three matches before losing to Kelly O’Brien from Bethel 6-3.

“Freshman Mariah Grimes placed fourth at 182, a weight class higher than her normal 160. Mariah won two matches. Halle Lapp at 132, also a freshman, won her first match even, pinning Cora Kagak from Valdez. The girls team of five placed second overall, (losing) to North Pole. Every member of the team that competed both boys and girls, brought home a victory. They will host the Grace Christian Grizzlies on Thursday night at 6 p.m. in the Alice Witte Gymnasium before traveling to the Nikiski Duals on Friday.”
