Wrestling season under way

The Popeye Wrestling Club and the Anchor Kings Wrestling Club began their 2016 season by participating in the North Peninsula Tournament in Nikiski March 4-5.

On Friday, Nikiski hosted a Greco tournament. Popeye had 12 wrestlers registered and 11 of the 12 placed in the top three. 

Top Greco wrestlers: Declan Barnard, first; Dallas Walker, second; Lucas Barnard, second; Mose Hayes, first; Damian Kerr, first; Seth I’nama, second; Cole Bernier, third; Chris Cudaback, second; Levi King, first; Tristen Cook, first; and Christopher Clucas, first.

On Saturday Nikiski hosted a Freestyle tournament. Popeye brought 21 wrestlers to compete against clubs around the state. 

Top Freestyle wrestlers: Saoirse Cook, first; Zavier Hayes, third; Lily King, third; Mose Hayes, first; Damian Kerr, second; Anthony Kalugin, first; Seth I’nama, second; Chris Cudaback, third; and Tristen Cook, first.

Popeye Wrestling Club will host its home tournament March 11 and 12 at the Homer High School. Wrestling on Friday will start at 5 p.m. with an all girls tournament and a folkstyle tournament. 

On Saturday, wrestling will begin at 10 a.m. with the freestyle tournament.

Anchor Kings results

Anchor Kings took five wrestlers to participate in the North Peninsula Greco tournament. All five wrestlers placed in the top three earning metals with Wayne Newman and Luciano Fasulo both earning first place. Kyle Wells earned second place and Silver Flowers and Tyler Johnson took home third place medals. 

Thirteen wrestlers for Anchor Kings participated in Saturday’s freestyle tournament in Nikiski. Six wrestlers earned medals and finished in the top three for their divisions. Wayne Newman took home a second first place metal for the two-day tournament. Luciano Fasulo and Kyle Wells battled hard for second place finishes. Tyler Johnson, Landan Branstetter, and Allison Wells fought through some tough battles and finished with third place medals. The fastest pin for the tournament came from Wayne Newman with a 17-second pin in his match against an opponent from Anchorage Youth Wrestling Academy. 

Other participants in the tournament included Martin Munoz, Alysha Nyvall, Parker Overson, Ryan Veal, Jeremy Russell, Silver Flowers, and Russell Nyvall, who made the team proud with their positive attitude and hard work. Anchor Kings’ only Pre-Bantam wrestler at this tournament, Martin Munoz, never quit smiling and was having the time of his life. He was so proud to be wearing the singlet, headgear, and shoes. 

Last week’s wrestlers of the week were Wayne Newman, Russell Nyvall, and Martin Munoz. The move of the week was the hip toss.
