Need a wooden boat? Flex School’s got ‘em. Five hundred of them, to be exact. But they aren’t for sale. Made by 10 of the students in Jeff Szarzi’s building trades class, these toy-sized items will be available for youngsters to decorate at this weekend’s 14th annual Wooden Boat Festival, which is organized by the Kachemak Bay Wooden Boat Society. Made with scrap rafter ends that were donated by Spenard Builders Supply, the little vessels are free of decoration. “The rest of the creativity is up to the little ones,” Szarzi said.

This Saturday 73 local residents will close a chapter in their lives when they graduate from Kenai Peninsula College. Whether it’s a general education, associate or baccalaureate degree, each one represents an achievement no more or less important than it is for students at other schools, although possibly a little sweeter. The student body at Kachemak Bay Campus is often classified as nontraditional … meaning a large number of degree-seekers are not fresh out of high school.
