Taxes were on the minds of Homer City Council members Monday, spawning vigorous debate and the introduction of one ballot measure and the shutdown of another. Council member Mike Heimbuch introduced an ordinance that would ask citizens to vote during the regular election in October whether the city should raise its sales tax in the summer and lower it in the winter.

Wooden boat enthusiasts seem to have a hard time pegging what it is, exactly, that fuels their enthusiasm. Some say it’s the millennia-old tradition of building boats out of tree, others like the look or feel of wood on waters, and many craftsmen say it’s the way the material acts in their hands as they work it. Homer residents and visitors can attempt to fathom for themselves the mystique of traditional boats this weekend at the fourth annual Kachemak Bay Wooden Boat Festival.
