Louis Garnero, left, and Maria Bisotto, right, stand next to their 1986 Volkswagen van on Thursday, July 7, 2022, in the parking lot of the Homer Public Library in Homer, Alaska. From Cordoba, Argentina, starting in 2016 they drove their Type 2 VW Kombi all the way from Argentina to Alaska, about 70,000 miles. Garnero and Bisotto arrived in Homer at the End of the Road on Wednesday, July 6.
They stayed in Mexico for 18 months during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have written about their adventures in a book in Spanish, "LiberArte: Historia de viaje y algo mas," with illustrations by Garnero. "Viaja y reite" means "travel and laugh" in Spanish.
The couple converted the van to a camper themselves. Although VW quit exporting the T2 to United States in 1979, it continued to make the T2 microbus in Brazil until 2013.
