Kachemak Bay Birders holds a birding trip at 2 p.m. Saturday on the Homer Spit. Meet at the parking lot on Kachemak Drive at the base of the Spit. They will be looking for returning migrants and seabirds out on the water with the incoming tide. Bring binoculars, field guide and scope if you have them. Michael Craig is the leader. “Self Compassion for Women: Going Beyond Coffee, Chocolate and Wine” is held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Many Rivers on East End Road. Susie Amundson runs the workshop to help women connect with their basic goodness, uncover hidden identities and triggers, lean in gently to difficult experiences and emotions, and wisely offer self care. Friendship Center Adult Day Services is open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday with extended hours for special situations. 

Homer Senior Citizens

Homer Senior Citizens lunch is open to seniors and their guests and is served 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Friday. The lunch menu for this week is: today, roast beef; Friday, baked coho salmon; Monday, chicken cordon bleu; Tuesday, barbecue beef brisket; Wednesday, chicken picatta.

Strong Women classes at Homer Senior Citizens Recreation Room are 2-3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Cost is $3 for members and $6 for nonmembers per class.

Kachemak Bay Campus

Five week, 2.5-hour classes in how to use MS Word and MS Excel start Sept. 7; sign up by Sept. 6. Visiting novelist Ron Carlson holds a public meeting and craft talk at 6:30 p.m. today in the Campus Commons. All are welcome.

At 7 p.m. Saturday, Dr. Gary Laursen, mycologist, University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Arctic Biology, presents a public lecture, “Mushrooms and other Fungi of the Sub Antarctic Archipelago.”

Pratt Museum

Summer hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily through Sept. 14. Starting Sept. 15, the museum is open noon-5 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. “Inspired by Place,” selected art from the museum collection, is on exhibit downstairs in the Contemporary Art Gallery through December. 

“Beneath the Surface,” featuring paintings by Rebecca Crowell that are inspired by archaeological maps of sediment layers beneath the earth, is on exhibit upstairs in the Special Exhibits Gallery through
Sept. 29.

R.E.C. Room

The REC Room (a Youth Resource & Enrichment Co-Op) offers new activities for the 2013-2014 School Year. Free programs include instruction on software installation and customization, digital music production, fresh and organic cooking, gardening. and slam poetry. The REC Room provides teens ages 12-18 with a safe space to hang out after school and get connected with positive resources, activities and programs available for youth in our community. It offers computers and wi-fi for homework, guitars, X Box Kinect, games, darts, rave gloves, movies, art supplies and more.

A program of Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic, the REC Room is always staffed by a program manager. HMS students can now ride Bus 65 for drop off at the REC Room. Call for details. Seldovia Village Tribe Health & Wellness Center

South Peninsula Hospital

The community is invited to an open house for the new South Peninsula Hospital Reflection Room from noon-2 p.m. Sunday  in the room on the lower level across from the cafeteria. The Reflection Room offers hospital visitors and staff a place to reflect, contemplate, meditate, pray or simply sit quietly. View the room and meet contributors to the project during the open house.

Applications are now being accepted to exhibit at the annual Rotary Health Fair, set for 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 2 at Homer High School. The fair is sponsored by Homer Kachemak Bay Rotary Club in partnership with South Peninsula Hospital. The purpose of the fair is to promote individual wellness and provide free and inexpensive information and screenings related to health. The theme is “It’s Your Life … Take a Day to Be Well.”

Military News

Navy Seaman Apprentice Rebecca M. Cogger, daughter of Tracey A. Cogger of Sedro Woolley, Wash., and Martin S. Cogger, of Homer, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. 

During the eight-week program, Cogger completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. 

Cogger is a 2011 graduate of Sedro-Woolley High School of Sedro Woolley, Wash.
