The Gilded Table reopens in larger space

The game shop hosts large gatherings, group game sessions and workshops.

The Gilded Table — Homer’s locally owned game shop — reopened in a new space on Tuesday, March 4. Still located in the blue Pho and Thai building at 345 Sterling Highway, they moved into the larger unit on the corner. The new space has been the former location of both Midnight Sun and Solar and Captain’s Toy Chest.

If you’re a fan of Magic the Gathering, enjoy playing board games or Dungeons and Dragons, or even just had your phone repaired locally, you might already be familiar with The Gilded Table. The business was opened in 2023 by Ethan Eutsler and Derek Benson. It quickly expanded to meet the needs of the community; they frequently hosted large gatherings, group game sessions, and workshops in their former space.

Freshly painted blue walls and large windows give the new location in Unit 105 a brightly lit energy.

During their first day open in the new space, the main room quickly filled with youth finished with school for the day, adults getting off work, and young people laughing and playing card games at the multiple, large tables set up in the space.

Benson said they had a busy weekend preparing the space and that it will only get better as they get more adjusted.

The shop aims to offer a safe space for both younger and older game aficionados to gather.

“It’s a good, family environment,” Benson said Tuesday, March 4. “We do get people of all ages. You know, we’ve had 8- to 10-year-olds playing games with 40-year-olds, which is really cool to see.”

Every Tuesday, the shop hosts a Dungeon and Dragons Adventure League, which now has a separate room to allow players to focus without distractions from patrons. Wednesdays are more open, often reserved for Magic the Gathering but occasionally other events. Thursdays are “open table rentals” allowing people to run their own campaigns or rent space for doing arts and crafts. Friday nights are exclusively for Magic the Gathering.

“I always have some big event going on,” Benson said.

They often do card drafts, Magic the Gathering set release parties, and pre-release events.

In their previous space, they could fit about 30 people for these kinds of events, and that was a packed house, Benson said. In the new space, he estimates they can fit at least 40.

They also rent the space for local workshops. Local metalsmith business, Stregas Moon Jewelry, will host a Hoop Earring Workshop on March 30 from 1 to 7 p.m. You can register online at stregasmoonjewelry.com/workshops. There is a $280 participation fee, but no experience is necessary, and all tools and materials are provided.

The Gilded Table is located at in the Pho and Thai building at 345 Sterling Highway, Unit 105 and open from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Benson said that once summer comes, he hopes to expand to six days a week.
